Module 10: Waves

Syllabus List of Modules Assignments Laboratories

1. Web Material: Mechanical waves

Objectives:
After completing this module, students will be able to distinguish between transverse and longitudinal waves.  They will be able to mathematically describe a sinusoidal wave and know the relationships between wavelength, frequency, and speed.  Students will be able to describe a standing wave.
Additional Material:
Serway, 3rd and 4th edition, Chapters 13.1 - 13.6
Serway,2nd edition, Chapters 13.1 - 13.8
CD and Workbook, Module 8.4 - 8.9, 8.13, 8.14
Note: Concentrate on the Web material.
Assignment:
Assignment 20

2. Web Material: Sound and water waves

Objectives:
After completing this module, students will be able to qualitatively describe sound and water waves.  Students will be able to calculate the fundamental and harmonic frequencies of wind instruments.
Additional Material:
Serway, 3rd and 4th edition, Chapters 13.7, 14.1 - 14.6
Serway, 2nd edition, Chapters 13.9, 14.1 - 14.6
CD and Workbook, Module 9.1 - 9.12
Note: Concentrate on the Web material.
Laboratory:
Standing waves
Assignment:
Assignment 21

3. Web Material: Electromagnetic waves

Objectives:
After completing this module, students will be able to qualitatively describe electromagnetic waves.  They will be able to identify different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.  Students will be able to calculate the energy and momentum transported by an electromagnetic wave.
Assignment:
Assignment 22

4. Web Material: The Doppler effect

Objectives:
After completing this module students will be able to calculate the Doppler shift of sound waves for cases where either the source or the observer are in motion.  Students will also be able to calculate the Doppler shift of electromagnetic waves when source and observer move relative to each other.
Additional Material:
Serway, 3rd and 4th edition, Chapter 13.8
Serway, 2nd edition, Chapter 13.10
Note: Concentrate on the Web material.
