Problem 1:

Describe the operation of acousto-optic devices and give a list of potential applications.  Draw and label a block diagram of a simple acousto-optic beam-deflection system.

Problem 2:

An argon laser beam with wavelength 514.5 nm is directed through a tellurium dioxide (n = 2.26) acousto-optic light-beam deflector excited by a 100-MHz acoustic wave.  Tellurium dioxide has an acoustic velocity of 4.2*105 cm/sec.  Calculate the deflection angle for the beam.

Problem 3:

State the equation for the rise time for an acousto-optic modulator as a function of laser-beam diameter.  Calculate and plot the rise time as a function of the spot diameter over the range from 10 to 1000 micrometers for a device fabricated from lithium niobate that has an acoustic velocity of 6.57*105 cm/sec.
