Assignment 4

Problem 1:

Produce a 2-dimensional contour plot of the intensity distribution in the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of a square aperture.  Choose a software package.  (Assume u(x0,y0) = 1 if |x0| < a/2, |y0| < a/2 and zero otherwise, and let z/k >>a2.)   Label your plot properly and comment how the plot depends on your choices for l, a, and z. 

Produce a similar plot for a rectangular aperture.  ( Assume u(x0,y0) = 1 if |x0| < a/2, |y0| < 3a/2 and zero otherwise.) 

Problem 2:

Write a short project proposal.  Tell me what you plan to do, why you have chosen that project, and how you plan to accomplish your goal.  Be specific enough so I can judge the feasibility of the project.  I will then discuss the details of your project with you and hopefully give you some helpful tips.
