Problem 1:

The plots show the intensity pattern in a 2mm by 2mm region centered on the optical axis 20 cm from the 0.5mm by 0.5mm aperture wit l = 1 mm.  They were constructed using Excel.

The first zeros on the sides of the central peak along the x-axis occur when q_x = l/a_x, and the first zeros on the sides of the central peak along they-axis occur when q_y = l/a_y,

The intensity pattern for a rectangular aperture is shown below.
